A Little Story about New iPhone Owners and My Failure as a Reporter

As time passed over the various time zones today, many lives were changed around 6 p.m. Some were able to get their hands on an Apple iPhone for the first time, while others, who failed to arrive in line on time, were told that the store had sold out. But no fear, all would not be lost as they could order the phone and wait just a little while longer. Oh, the horror!

I was able to take advantage of a lunch break today and visit the only store in Lubbock, TX that would have the device for sale. Here are some pictures from my cell phone of the line that had already formed by 4 pm, just hours before the iPhone would go on sale.

Here is a quick video of the line and how it wrapped around in front of the AT&T store in Lubbock, TX. However, until further editing is done, please ignore the last 5 seconds as I didn’t realize I was still recording.

There is where I briefly met Ed Bertram and Suelema Saldaña. They were the ones at the front of the line. What was the price they had to pay for their place in line? They simply arrived about 24 hours early to start the line. That’s right, just 24 hours. Just a walk in the park compared to some that camped for 5 days. Call it intuition, strategy, luck, or whatever. It doesn’t matter. They now have iPhones and most likely you don’t.

    Meet Ed and Suelema:

    Ed and Suelema

First of all, I just want to say thanks to Ed Bertram and Suelema Saldaña for their willingness to give me a few moments of their time. And I apologize for the quality of the photos as I failed to check the batteries in my digital camera and had to use my camera phone. I also failed to grab my notepad that I was going to use to get basic information. Let’s just say that any aspirations I may have had of becoming a reporter have been put on hold. In fact, they tore a page from their Sudoku book (and I do love me some Sudoku) so that I could get their names for this blog. While it was probably some sort of advertisement page for the publisher of that particular sudoku book, it’s still an embarassing way to make a first impression to what are now glorious iPhone owners. Here is the page they tore to write down their names for me:

Nonetheless, since I only had an hour for lunch and I had already used most of it stopping by a Chick-Fil-A (and it was so good) and driving to our only AT&T corporate owned store, I did not have time to do a formal interview - aforementioned ineptitude aside. I was able to learn a few things about our new found hero and heroine. They arrived at the store at about 6 pm on June 28th, simply 24 hours before the actual sale of the iPhone. The had an air mattress available that they slept on during their one-night stay. It was actually a fairly cool night and morning here on the South Plains of the Llano Estacado. Obviously, they had their handy dandy Sudoku book and each other to pass the time - although they didn’t give me this information directly, I used my superior deductive skills to figure that out. Next in line, would be an informal interview on what they think of the device, that is, if I was prepared and knew what I was doing. I failed to get any kind of contact info, so it’s up to them to try to contact me if this is something they would like to share. Luckily, my haste to return to work did not prevent me from writing down this website in the previously mentioned Sudoku book. I know the anticipation is murder as we sit and wait to see how life continues for our new found ‘Possessors of the iPhone’.
