Lubbock, TX Western All Stars Advance in Little League World Series
By Jeff | August 18, 2007
The Western All Stars Little League team from Lubbock, TX took care of business pretty easily thanks to the two young men pictured above. Garrett Williams (left) pitched a masterful game. Little League rules prohibit a player from throwing more than 85 pitches in a game (exception: if the pitches reaches 85 while facing a batter, he is allowed to complete the pitching cycle with that batter.) Garrett allowed the lead-off hitter to reach base and make it to second on a wild pitch later in the first inning. Then the switch was turned on. Garrett recorded 10 strikeouts in a row and ended the game with 17 strikeouts as he reached his pitch limit before the last out of the game could be recorded. Bryndan Arredondo came in relief to record the final out as he faced two batters. It had to have been a boring game for the defenders as Garrett struck out opponent after opponent.
Tyler Thorne (right) provided all the offense the team from Texas needed as he hit 2-run bombs on back to back plate appearances to give his team 2/3 of it’s offensive production in a 6-0 win. There was 10 minute delay in the middle of the game as Stephen Smith blasted a shot into right field and took second as the fielder slightly mis-played the ball. As Stephen was getting up from his slide and began to turn around, the second fielder missed the throw in and the ball struck Stephen in the face hard. I just knew his nose was broken. After several minutes of icing down the area and working to contain the bleeding, Stephen walked to the dug out on his own accord and some grounds crew members came to clean up the blood-spilled area. Lo and behold, Stephen was back out there playing defense and only missed scoring as he was replaced by a ‘Special Runner’. That’s one tough kid.
Western now gets to face a team from Chandler, AZ as they won earlier in the day by a score of 16-6. Game will be Sunday Aug. 19th at 11 am (Central) and as soon as that game is over, I will try to update you as soon as possible.
I also wanted to throw some mad props to the two teams that played below on Friday. This is on of the wildest endings to a game that I can remember in Little League history and just as easily the best catch made ever by a little leaguer. Check out this video:

And I totally agree, at least from what I’ve seen lately. He totally dominated everyone he faced and from here on out, it just depends on how dedicated he is to baseball to see if he can translate his obvious talent into a possible career in the sport.
We will all be watching!
