    NFL Updates Logo for 2008

    By Jeff | August 31, 2007

This is one of those things that do not appear to be broken until you see the fix. The NFL has decided to give a slight make-over to its official league logo. Below, you can see the current version as well as the new version that will be officially unveiled at the 2008 NFL Draft.

    Old and New NFL Shields

At first glance, it appears not much was done, but there were some significant modifications. Most likely, the first thing you noticed is the darker color of blue in the new logo. I like it. The darker blue definitely seems to be a more modern color. It’s meaner and manlier too, if I may use those descriptions.

The next thing you probably noticed fairly quickly is the obvious decrease in the amount of stars at the top of the shield. The previous shield consisted of 25 stars that don’t appear to have any significance whatsoever according to a report on USAToday.com. I imagine the designer simply found a size for the stars that seem to fill the space and went with it. The updated version has 8 stars that represent the 8 divisions the NFL is now divided into. Whether it was intended or not, essentially you have 4 stars on each side of the football that could be said to represent the two conferences (AFC and NFC).

Another change you will notice is the update football graphic. The newer version is angled more aggressively as well as given a more 3-D look, almost like it is propped up on a tee. The font for the letters “N F L” were updated. This is a great change. I never understood the purpose of the curly loop on the ‘L’. It was stupid and didn’t really match the rest of the letters. Maybe it was supposed to represent an arm flexing or the designer thought he needed to fill up more of the white space. I don’t know and it doesn’t matter. The new logo fixes it and it looks great!

This last update is a little more subtle, but the logo is thinner and more aerodynamic. The best way to compare it is to look at the bottoms of the shields side-by-side and it will be more clear. After all, this is the new NFL, where the players are stronger, faster, and in better shape. We’ll call it a more athletic logo as well.
