Little Baby ThinkBox Update (14 Weeks)
By Jeff | September 15, 2007
My wife is considered to be 14 weeks into her pregnancy. The following information about the development of Little Baby ThinkBox is taken from eMedTV as I find their site easy to use and understand for the purposes of this blog. Picture is taken from Pregnancy.org.
Congratulations — Momma ThinkBox is now in her second trimester! She may be starting to feel better. For a lot of women, the second trimester of pregnancy is when they are most energetic.
At this time, Momma ThinkBox may have gained a few pounds. Keep in mind, the amount of weight gained does not directly correspond to the weight of the baby. If it seems like a ton of weight is gained, it does not necessarily mean a huge baby will be delivered.
At 14 weeks pregnant, Baby ThinkBox is about 3.2 to 4.5 inches long and weighs about 1 ounce. Baby ThinkBox will start to get covered with a soft, fine hair over its body called lanugo. It is thought that this lanugo provides protection to the developing skin. The lanugo will be shed before HE or she is born and replaced with thicker, coarser hair.
Speaking of HE or she — Baby ThinkBox is definitely a “HE or she” now — the sex organs are well defined at this point. While the sex of the baby was determined when the egg was fertilized by the sperm, by week 14 of pregnancy the baby’s sex organs have fully differentiated into male or female.
Other fetal development that is occurring around week 14 of pregnancy includes the following:
- The ears have moved from the neck onto the head
- The digestive glands are complete
- The vocal cords are complete
- The thyroid gland starts to produce hormones
- The baby begins to practice inhaling and exhaling
- The baby’s chin no longer rests on his or her chest
- For boys, the prostate gland is developing
- For girls, the ovaries move from the abdomen into the pelvis
- The hands are becoming functional.
At 14 weeks pregnant, Baby ThinkBox is now receiving all of its nourishment from the placenta. The placenta has also taken over all hormone production from the ovaries. These hormones will continue to play a vital role in maintaining the pregnancy along with the changes in Momma ThinkBox’s body.
During week 14 of pregnancy, pregnancy hormones should be leveling off, which means that Momma ThinkBox should be experiencing less nausea, less frequent urination, and less exhaustion. (Yay!)
Other changes to her body during week 14 of pregnancy may include the following:
- The veins on her chest and breasts may become more dilated.
- The areolas (the darker colored part around your nipple) of her breasts are darkening and growing larger in diameter.
- Her body is preparing for breastfeeding by growing new milk ducts. As she moves through her pregnancy, the increased amounts of progesterone and estrogen in the body may cause the breasts to become larger, heavier, lumpy, and sore. The nipple area may become more sensitive to touch. (Booo! Stop with the soreness!)
From week 14 to the end of pregnancy, she may feel warm — like a heater. (Oh, great…)
