We’re Going Streaking!
By Jeff | December 2, 2007
Well, not exactly, unless you thoroughly enjoy surfing, reading, and commenting on blogging websites in the nude. Hey, I’m not judging. You gotta do what you gotta do. All is fair in love and war - and I feel confident that I can add blogging in front of the privacy of your computer screen to that statement.
What I’m actually talking about is something that Gyutae Park over at winningtheweb.com started. It’s not really streaking per say. It’s closer to bar hopping as it is explained. It’s just a whole lot of fun to yell “We’re going streaking!” rather than “We’re going Blog Hopping!” due to the lovable character Will Ferrell portrayed in the movie Old School. Oh, that was Greatness!
However, the thought of going Blog Hopping with my fellow bloggers sounds like a ton of fun and I don’t even have to worry about, er, um… cold weather.
THE BASIC CONCEPT:
Every week, Gyutae Park is going to update the post on winningtheweb.com with a featured blog from one of their Winning the Web readers. Everyone else should hop to the featured blog of the week and leave some great insightful comments, maybe even give some links, and form bonds of everlasting friendship.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED:
Now this is the beauty of the blog hopping concept. It’s all about being social and giving to each other. Basically, the current week’s featured blog will pick the next week’s featured blog depending on who was most active in commenting or sending links.
To be featured as the weekly blog hop blogger…
- Link to the post from your blog.
The goal here is to increase exposure for our featured blogs in the blog hopping events. The more links, the more value for all.- Leave a comment with your blog’s URL on the featured blog site.
- Visit the featured blogs each week and be active, leave comments, and link when appropriate.
- Hope the featured blogger picks you for the next blog hop!
CONCERNS:
The concept sounds fun and I’ll be jumping in with both feet. On the other hand, after giving it some thought, a few questions came to my mind. First, a week seems like eternity to a blogger so it depends on how faithful or fickle bloggers will be when trying to follow the new featured blog of the week. Patience while waiting to be picked to be featured could prove to be too much to handle for many bloggers. I’m not sure what the alternative would be, because a featured blog of the “day” would be extremely difficult to sustain. On the other side, would it be effective enough to have 5 or more featured blogs in a week. I don’t know.
Of course, that brings me to my second point. It’s only one blog a week. Theoretically, if this does keep enough steam to last a year, then only 52 blogs would be featured. That’s not nearly enough and many would be hard pressed to pick only one for fear of hurting another’s feelings. So, my other fear is that this could turn into a popularity contest and each would simply pick a blog of their closest friend or one that they already had a good blogging network with; thus, basically eliminating the reason this concept was even thought up.
These are fairly minor gripes, and there is no way that this concept will escape some type of evolution shortly because of the above concerns mentioned anyway. There is still no doubt that the short term benefit for the blogs that are chosen could be solid. I guess ultimately, it depends on the actions of the blogging community.
Ultimately, the goal is to increase exposure which will hopefully increase your blog’s readership; thus, increasing the monetary value of your blog. It’s a cool idea and I’m more than thankful that I ran across it via freshgeeks.com. I must say that it is a very well designed site. It’s also the first featured blog for this project. So here are my recommendations for posts to check out:
Blog, It’s What’s For Dinner
More Geeky Stuff: Quiz & SEO Text Browser
Geeky USB Stuff
Theory of Healthy Blog Portions
Those are some of the posts on www.freshgeeks.com that I enjoyed or found helpful. As the week progresses, I’ll be checking some more.
So check out the featured site. Comment with praise, suggestions, or constructive criticism. Who knows? Maybe you’ll soon be discovering the potential benefit of Blog Hopping (whether you do it in the nude or not) with a few more faithful readers.

Thanks for participating, Jeff!

No problem jblu. I’m just glad that I found your blog so that I could join in.
While I have some concerns about the long term effectiveness, it’s a cool idea that is well worth any honest attempt. Plus, I’ll be able to check out some cool blogs that I may have otherwise never have come in contact with.

Hmm… Jeff I share your concerns with the idea. You could spend half your free time commenting and participating for a year and never get picked. Seems pretty random. Maybe we should put our heads together and come up with something similar but takes into account the concerns you listed… Just an idea.

I was thinking the same thing about getting together on this. I bet we can figure out something.
It’s a great idea, just needs some slight modifications.

Hey Jeff,
Thanks for the mention. I’m glad more people are participating in the blog hopping project.
You raise some valid concerns. Of course the idea isn’t perfect but I thought it would be a good way to build community and for bloggers to network with one another.
Old School is a great movie. We are going streaking indeed. Haha, nice.

Jeff, I did, and perhaps still do, have the same concerns as you. I’m glad I was picked, but I can see the flaws that you pointed out. Still, it’s a great first idea that hopefully can evolve into something that will better satisfy all participants.
As I said in my post on the blog hop, I’m always open to supporting any networking ideas that you all may have, and perhaps also I can generate some of my own.
