AT&T Hands Out Some Freebies for the Holidays

Recently, AT&T announced some free downloadable holiday-themed items for their approximate 67 million wireless customers. Subscribers have the option to download a free holiday ringtone, game, or answer tone. Obviously, some restrictions apply as with anything in business these days. Technically, the item is free and you have a choice of one of them. However, the data that is used to actually download the item is billed depending on whatever plan you have. If you currently have the Media Net Pay Per Use feature provisioned, then you will be billed $0.01 per kilobyte of data used to download your free item. On the other hand, if you currently have Unlimited Media Net ($19.99 and up monthly depending on the type of phone you have) then you will see no additional charges. Also, if you choose to get an Answer Tone, then you must have the Answer Tones feature provisioned on your account for $0.99 monthly charge.
*Side note: In case you were unaware, ringtones and answer tones are totally separate things. Ringtones are what you here when someone calls you. They are also those annoying little sounds you here in restaurants, movie theatres, museums, and various other public places when people are too stubborn to turn them on vibrate or turn them off. Punks! Answer tones are what the caller hears on their phone while your phone is ringing instead of the mock phone ring that we are all accustomed to.
Let me break it down for you white boy style: While I’m strolling down in the ‘hood (and for white people like me, that simply means the neighborhood of my fellow suburban W.A.S.P. members) my wife can call me and “Party Like a Rockstar” by Shop Boyz (ringtone) would be heard by all those around me so I can display my coolness; on the other hand, my wife would actually hear something along the lines of “When a Man Loves a Woman” by Percy Sledge (answer tone) so that I could display my sweet, loving, caring, and affectionate side without getting harassed by the fools I roll with. Yeah. Same call, two different effects.
The following information is taken directly from AT&T’s press release that can be viewed by clicking the link.
The holiday ringtones and Answer Tones that are available from AT&T free of charge include:
Ringtones
- Jingle Bells
- The Dreidel Song
- Noche de Paz
Answer Tones
- Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree by Cyndi Lauper
- Wizards in Winter by Trans-Siberian Orchestra
- Feliz Navidad by Jose Feliciano
Games
- Santa’s Tower Bloxx by Digital Chocolate
To obtain the free offer, customers must simply send a text message with the word GIFT to the number 7230. They will receive a text message with a link to download their free tone or game. Normal data usage charges apply during download, based on the customer’s data plan.
So, go ahead and get yourself a freebie if you use AT&T as your wireless cell phone provider as they don’t come around very often anymore. The good thing about the season for giving is that every once in a while, you are the one that is actually receiving.

You are welcome. Gotta love free stuff!

Thanks for the heads up. The thing about downloading tones, like you mentioned, is that you have to pay for the MediaNET data fees if you don’t have the plan. I dl’ed a free game from ATT and ended up having to pay 4 bucks in data fees. But hey, if you got the data plan, then you’ve got a free tone.

You’re welcome jblu. Yep, and I have the unlimited data plan so it was no big deal to me, although I decided to go with the Answer Tone from Trans-Siberian Orchestra due to my recent experience.
Awesome!
