    The Un-Recruited

    By Jeff | February 6, 2008

Wow! Did you hear this story? I’m all about setting high goals and dreaming big. I firmly believe everyone should create actions plans that give guidance and assistance in order to achieve those hopes and dreams.

However, holding a press conference as a means to fulfill one’s dreams is not exactly what I had in mind. February 6th was National Signing Day for Division I NCAA football. This is the day where college coaches, fans, and athletic programs know for certain what high school prep star will be joining their favorite University’s football roster. With the age of the internet and sports news galore, this day is quickly becoming over-hyped. The signing classes always sound promising by those reporting for the various colleges. Propaganda at its finest.

    Check this kid out!

Kevin Hart announcing plans to sign with CalFor Kevin Hart, this day came and went with embarassment and disappointment. Apparently, Hart held a press conference to announce that he was going to sign with Jeff Tedford and the California Golden Bears. The problem is that Coach Tedford had never really heard of Kevin Hart. Uh oh! Hart claims he had been trying to decide between Cal , Oregon , and Oklahoma State . Except that none of the above were even offering a scholarship or requesting his services. Can you say Waterboy?

Bobby Burton of Rivals.com thinks that “this guy apparently has no offers.” The website also ranks Hart as a two-star prospect, which is, get this, the lowest level of players the service even ranks. Ouch! At this point, there is a ton of speculation as to whether this is a hoax thought of by Hart, or if someone actually pretended to be representing the colleges and tricked him. Either way, it’s pretty funny.

I’m leaning towards believing that Kevin Hart did it as a publicity stunt. But I can’t help but wonder if one of Hart’s friends are sitting in their house right now thinking…

    “Dude, my bad.”

***As I was completing this post, I found out that Kevin Hart admitted to making up the hoax himself, but I liked what I had already written so I left it in tact. You can read the admission report here.

I actually think that’s really funny. You have to hand it to him. He’s got a lot of nerve.

Well, then it’s a good thing that I’m here to say it…

Still, you have to know that he is hating life right now. Eventually, this will pass over.. but the story will remain forver in the annals of the internet if anyone wants to google his name

Maybe he thought that he deserved a 2nd look and that this hype and media attention might get it for him. It does have everyone talking. Will it work out for him? Doubt it on a division I level, maybe lower?

I doubt he would play any higher than JUCO level if at all. It’s been well documented that he is considered a 2-star recruit out of 5-star rating and publicity doesn’t change that.

Maybe he thought that publicity would help, or maybe he didn’t realize that what he did would be broadcast nationally. My thought is that he held a local press conference meant only for his town in hopes that when he did leave for college, people would forget over time. Who knows?
