1 Down and 901 to Go
By Jeff | February 16, 2008
Pat Knight recorded his first win as the new head coach of the Texas Tech men’s basketball coach after the resignation of Legendary Coach Bobby Knight. He is now 901 wins behind his dad who is the NCAA leader in coaching victories.
The Red Raiders have struggled on road games all year long, but are undefeated in Lubbock, TX at United Spirit Arena this season. Unfortunately for Pat Knight, history did not change and he lost his first two games that were both on the road. He now has a record of 1-2.
In an attempt to bring excitement and enthusiasm for our new coach and basketball program, Lubbock Mayor David Miller, pronounced Wednesday February 13th, Pat Knight Day. Obviously, it worked. The Red Raiders welcomed the 18th ranked Big 12 leader Kansas State Wildcats into town and Texas Tech was a fairly big underdog. Of course, that means nothing to the locals.
I attended the game with great excitement and apprehension of how we would play. I had only missed one home game all year, so I felt good about our chances because of our past home successes. You could feel the excitement in the air and there is no way that I could accurately describe it here. It just felt like this was going to be a special game. And it started with the announcing of the lineups.
Kansas State was announced first as is the custom for all road teams. Then the lights went out. The crowd went nuts. For whatever reason, Bobby Knight would not allow such a pre-game ceremony. Then Jump Around by House of Pain was played and that increased the excitement to a level that we typically reserve for the Longhorns and stinkin’ Aggies.
Pack it up, pack it in
Let me begin
I came to win
Battle me that’s a sin
I won’t tear the sack up
Punk you’d better back up
Try and play the role and the whole crew will act up…
Yeah, that’s greatness right there.
I love that song. I no longer have the CD because someone stole it. Luckily, I have it on my MP3 player. I think that set the tone for the entire game. From Tech’s first basket to the end of the game, Tech led. The game was never tied except for 0 - 0. Kansas State got close several times and even turned a 22 point deficit into a 4 point deficit in the second half, but the Red Raiders seemed to have an answer every time. The students were fantastic! They were loud, albeit at times inappropriate, but louder than usual nonetheless.
The ‘Raider Power’ chants came early and often. For Texas Tech fans, there is nothing better than several thousand people chanting ‘Raider!’ and ‘Power’ back and forth across the football stadium or basketball arena. It’s awesome!
Kansas State’s Michael Beasley might be the next NBA superstar. It appeared he was frustrated all night, and yet he still managed to pull down 15 rebounds and score 22 points. The man has skills. But that doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, because he still lost to my Texas Tech Red Raiders. Michael Beasley was a loser on Pat Knight Day!
Texas Tech’s next game is in Lubbock again on Saturday February 16th and yours truly will be there to see the stupid Oklahoma Sooners get defeated in person.
