American Idol: Top 12 Girls - ThinkBox Style

    By Jeff | February 21, 2008

As with my previous post on the Top 12 guys, I’m going to give my honest opinion on how the contestants performed and what they’re real chances are of winning the contest. My goal is to accurately predict how each week will turn out in regards to who gets cut. I may even post a sort of stat on how well I do. This is not intended to be a recap of the events or songs that were sung but merely my opinion on their performances. So I apologize if you missed the show and came here to find out what happened. May I suggest getting a DVR? Let’s get to Wednesday’s show.

    Kristy Lee CookKristy Lee Cook

Decent performance. Didn’t blow me away, but it didn’t suck either. Safe middle of the road performance. Kristy will move on, no doubt. However, she will need to start to shine if she plans on moving much farther.

    Joanne BorgellaJoanne Borgella

Wow. She butchered her song. I was surprised she did so bad. Her notes seemed to be all over the place. The ending made my dogs cry and I don’t even own any dogs. Joanne moves into the low performer list.

    Alaina WhitakerAlaina Whitaker

She started out shaky, and I was like ‘oh, great’. But then it seemed like she enjoyed the faster beat and rocked it out. I had gone to the kitchen to grab a drink and found myself singing along with her. I know. That’s almost as good as a Simon endorsement. Fo’ real. She easily moves on and will make the Top 6.

    Amanda OvermyerAmanda Overmyer

This girl reminds me of Taylor Hicks in the fact that her sound is just so different from the other contestants. I think she will stay in the contest for awhile because of that. Unfortunately, if there is no change, she will become monotonous. If she wins, I don’t think she will be able to continually bust out hits that the public will buy. Her response to the pants made no sense either. She couldn’t afford a whole pair so she used 3 pair to make one. Um, 3 is more than one so how did you afford 3? But she probably could beat up Simon and I think he would like that.

    Amy DavisAmy Davis

Ouch! My ears. No! It was boring, but her vocals were bad enough that I couldn’t fall asleep. It reminded me of those cartoons where the cats would sing on the fence and ’sing’, then get knocked off by flying clocks, shoes, etc. Sorry Amy, you’re a beautiful girl but it’s time to pack your bags.

    Brooke WhiteBrooke White

Good song choice. Good performance. Didn’t blow me away. Hated the ‘bah bah bah’ part at the end. Stupid. However, even with that, she was one of the stronger performers so far. She could use some wardrobe advice. I wasn’t digging the grey top. I don’t know. Simon’s ‘washing up liquid’ reference made me think that he was referring to a particular feminine cleaning product. I’m glad he explained it to mean dish washing liquid.

    Alexandrea LushingtonAlexandrea Lushington

I had high hopes with her entrance. Then she finished the intro and it all went down hill for me. The vocals didn’t seem to be there. I was surprised to hear Randy say she hit every note. Maybe she did, maybe she didn’t. Either way, some different notes should have been used. My wife thought she did good. I was like, let’s see if Simon agrees with me. He did. Validation. I’m the man of my household.

    Kady MalloyKady Malloy

She’s gorgeous. I wasn’t feeling the brown dress. I’m not really a fashion guy, but I still have opinions. She missed several notes and that sucks. Her Britney Spears impersonations are spot on. Too bad her true vocals are not. Her performance was boring. Bad vocals + boring performance = low performer and cut potential. Too bad, because her looks and humor would have carried her far. We’ll see if she moves on.

    Asia’h EppersonAsia’h Epperson

Okay, I got to get this off my chest. I hate her conehead hair do. And she’s pretty, so somebody please tell her. Strong performance. I wasn’t crazy that she didn’t pronounce her ‘H’. I wonder if the silent ‘H’ at the end of her name has any significance to that trend. Curious. Mostly obvious in ‘heart’, but her showmanship was fun and the vocals were good. Top 6 lock.

    Remiele MalubayRamiele Malubay

She’s seems to be the most pure singer of the group. In the future, I hope she is able to dress better for the song she is going to sing. I’m not even sure of what I’m talking about. All I know is that her attire choice didn’t match the song choice. Beautiful vocals. My wife is not crazy about the bangs all swooped over. I tend to agree, but it doesn’t bother me as much as Asia’h conehead do. She is probably the frontrunner on the girls side.

    Syesha MercadoSyesha Mercado

Fun song. Great performance. I enjoyed it more than any other. I think Remiele still has the best vocals, but Syesha gave the best overall performance. Top 6 Lock. Is it just accepted that Paula is incoherent in her responses? By the way, Syesha doesn’t spell yes. Or maybe I’m just crazy.

    Carly SmithsonCarly Smithson

I think the producers figured she was the frontrunner based upon all her previous auditions. Unfortunately, this performance is completely forgettable. No, Carly! Say it isn’t so. I became somewhat attached to her bad luck turned into good fortune and hard work story that I had high hopes. Her performance was decent so maybe I just had high expectations. Wow, Simon said something similar. Too bad I can’t prove I’m not simply copying his comments. The song was boring so maybe that was the problem. Regardless, the showmanship wasn’t there either. Doesn’t matter really, because her past auditions will carry her a few weeks unless she continues to be a let down.

Top Four Performances were in this order:

    1. Syesha Mercado
    2. Ramiele Malubay
    3. Asia’h Epperson
    4. Alaina Whitaker

Top Four in Danger of getting cut

    1. Amy Davis
    2. Joanne Borgella
    3. Kady Malloy
    4. Alexandrea Lushington

Really, I could have cut the list off at top 3 and worst 3, but I did four for the guys and felt the need to keep it consistent. I’m going to say that Amy and Joanne get cut Thursday. I think Kady’s humor and personality from previous shows will carry her at least another week. Alexandrea probably doesn’t deserve to be in the low performer list, but she was fourth from the worst in my eyes. She will move on easily.

Is your opinion different? Let me know.

Just discovered this site, although this is already too late. She got voted off. I got to agree with you on the conehead hair do but she belt out a pretty good performance on this one.

LOL - yeah, she’s a beautiful girl, but some of her hair styles are questionable at best.

She hurt herself with trying to sing Diva songs - I think she thought she was a little more talented than she really was…

which is sad, because she’s better than a few that are still in it, in fact I would probably put her third, maybe fourth best female
