American Idol Season 7: Top 10 Girls Performances - ThinkBox Style

    By Jeff | February 28, 2008

As usual with my American Idol series, I’m going to give my honest opinion on how the contestants performed and what they’re real chances are of getting eliminated. My goal is to accurately predict how each week will turn out in regards to who gets cut.

As mentioned yesterday, I predicted correctly three of the four contestants that were cut last week. That was somewhat easy by the performances that were given, but good nonetheless. I’m currently in a contest with Jason of PopCritics.com in that category and we are tied. This is not intended to be a recap of the events or songs that were sung but merely my opinion on their performances. We are now down to the top ten girls. Let’s get to Wednesday’s show.

    Carly SmithsonCarly Smithson

Tonight was the prettiest that Carly has looked as a performer so mad props for that. I wasn’t impressed with the song that much. I hated the ending, or at least most of the ending. It was a better performance than last week, so that’s good news for Carly. I’m not really a tattoo kind of guy and it may be tough for the average American to continually look past it unless she starts to blow us away. She has yet to do that in the real competition. She will move on without issue this round though.

    Syesha MercadoSyesha Mercado

The baby cry was utterly ridiculous - if I can wear my Simon hat for a bit. I’m not sure at this point if that’s going to help her or hurt her. I mean, I can impersonate an 80s porn star, but you don’t see me doing that on this website… oh, wait. Bad example. I wasn’t crazy about the song. I thought it was sung well however. I’m not a music major so I personally didn’t recognize the pitch problems, but I do agree with the fact that parts were uninteresting. Syesha will live another round. I doubt most of America saw many flaws other than song choice.

    Brooke WhiteBrooke White

What can I say? I love it! I absolutely loved it! I really can’t explain it, really. Her smile was contagious. The sound was solid and the little “flirting” with Simon was funny because of the “vain” content of the song. Easily best performance so far. Brooke buys at least two weeks from that performance.

    Remiele MalubayRamiele Malubay

Hmmm. I’m not so sure about this one. The verses sounded like she was cutting off the notes too short. Something wasn’t right there. I don’t know if it was the arrangement or what, but it wasn’t anything special. I about to start a ‘Mute Paula’ ritual because she brings absolutely nothing to the table. I agree she has a strong voice and some of that showed, but it didn’t come all together in this performance. It doesn’t matter though, she will still move on.

    Kristy Lee CookKristy Lee Cook

You’re no good, you’re no good, baby… well, that was pretty good. The look went well with the song. She seemed to hit all the right notes and got into the performance a bit. Probably the second best performance of the night, so obviously she will move on. On the other hand, I’m not a country music fan at all so it may be interesting to see what I think as the show continues if she begins to ‘cowboy up’.

    Amanda OvermyerAmanda Overmyer

Wow, she’s kinda hot with the bandanna look. Nice. What in the ….?!?!?! Is that the bride of Frankenstein? Well, I did say that if she didn’t attempt to change then her Janis Joplin sound might get monotonous. I guess I didn’t realize what I was asking for. She looked absolutely horrible. It was like a Glamour Shots photo from 1992 with her Medusa highlights. Horrible. I don’t even remember the song really so I guess it wasn’t that great either. I’d rewind my DVR, but I’m not sure I want to see that again. Worst performance of the night. Potential elimination for Amanda I’m afraid.

    Alaina WhitakerAlaina Whitaker

Ugh! I like the song. I guess I am a Grease fan at heart. I love Olivia Newton John. I remember playing an Olivia Newton John 8-track when I was growing up. Yeah, I know. Most of you don’t even know what I’m talking about. Some notes were off for me, but for the most part it was okay. It wasn’t that great. And there seemed to be some posture issues with some of the camera shots. I don’t know if it was the dress or the camera angle, but she seemed humped over at times. That’s irrelevant really, as Alaina will stay on the show based upon Simon’s ‘dark horse’ comment.

    Alexandrea LushingtonAlexandrea Lushington

I hated it. I enjoy the song in spurts during appropriate movie scenes, but other than that, it sucks. Is there something to the whole re-gripping of the microphone trend? Alexandrea seemed to do it more than others, but it’s a bit annoying. She could tell she didn’t do a great job by her lack of confidence when the show was over. I’m tired of all the quotes like “well, I know it was a good song choice for me and that’s all that matters”. No, Alexandrea, that’s not all that matters if you want to win. If you want to make money, you have to cater to your customers. If you’re customers don’t like what you’re selling, then they aren’t going to buy. Listen to the judges for crying out loud.

    Kady MalloyKady Malloy

You gotta love the Britney Spears impersonations. The problem is, Britney Spears is becoming old news like Kady’s repeated bad performances. I don’t have much to say here. It was awful. Kady is beautiful, but her performances have been dreadful. She is completely out of her element with this show. 16-?? year old guys everywhere will be sad because they will no longer see her on the show after Thursday. Kady easily gets eliminated.

    Asia’h EppersonAsia’h Epperson

What? Where did all that hair come from? Ouch! Yeah… that must have been some kind of ego trip if she thought she could sing some Celine Dion. I’m not sure what she was smokin’, but it wasn’t reality. Listen ladies, don’t do Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, or Celine Dion. They will make you look stupid. Anyway, I hated it, but I love the song. Celine is the greatest love song artist of all time. Period. End of discussion. And somebody tell her what to do with her hands. It was almost as if she was trying to draw attention to the fact that she had long hair tonight. Uh, yeah… we can see it. I don’t see that she will have any problem moving on though.

Top Three Performances were in this order:

    1. Brooke White
    2. Kristy Lee Cook
    3. Syesha Mercado

Top Three in Danger of getting cut

    1. Kady Malloy
    2. Amanda Overmyer
    3. Alexandrea Lushington

I’ll be honest, I’m really struggling with tonight. Only two performances stuck out and the rest were mediocre. Kady’s and Amanda’s were awful. The problem is that I think Amanda will get enough votes to remain in the competition because of her unique style. However, everyone wants someone unique, but that doesn’t always pan out. I mean, Taylor Hicks is by far the most unique contestant to win but where is he now. I sure as heck don’t know and don’t care for that matter. I doubt he’s selling a ton of CD’s. Something is also telling me that Alaina will be going home.

The guys far out performed the ladies this round. Nonetheless, two guys and two girls are going home and Kady Malloy is going to be one of them. I’m gonna go with my gut feeling on the Amanda thought. I just think too many will vote because of her uniqueness. I’m going to pick that Alexandrea gets eliminated with Kady. I didn’t like her outfit, song choice, hand movements or head movements. I just don’t think there will be enough there to keep her in the competition over Amanda even though she had a better performance than Amanda. Let’s just hope Amanda doesn’t go Einstein on us again.

You knew that I couldn’t resist, so which of the photos below is your favorite Amanda?
