American Idol Season 7 Cuts to 10 Finalists

    By Jeff | March 20, 2008

American Idol Season 7 Cuts to 10 FinalistsAmerican Idol Season 7 held their second elimination round for the 12 Finalist on Wednesday, March 19th, 2008. Now we are down to the point of the show where only one contestant gets eliminated at a time so the margin for error has decreased significantly.

If you are keeping up with my contest with Jason of Pop Critics, then you know that I regained my one contestant lead last week with the correct elimination prediction of David Hernandez.

This week we both chose Kristy Lee Cook so regardless of what happened my lead was secure. Still, I was wrong and that’s not good enough for me. Although, I’m more than satisfied that Amanda is off the show. If I can interject a little side note here; did you notice that all of the bottom three were females. I did. It’s more validation in my feeling that one of the guys will win. I still contend that Brooke is the only female with a real shot, but I still have her third place at best but probably fourth.

Jason is now 7-7 (50%) and I am at 8-6 (57.1%). My one contestant lead remains intact, but I’m a little upset with myself because I was oh so close to going ahead and declaring Amanda as my elimination pick. When only one leaves a week, a mistake like that again in the future could cost me my lead. I could have had a two contestant lead. Live and learn, I guess. Here is my ranking for the performances of the 11 finalists just to refresh:

    1. David Archuleta - “The Long and Winding Road”
    2. Syesha Mercado - “Yesterday”
    3. David Cook - “Day Tripper”
    4. Brooke White - “Here Comes the Sun”
    5. Michael Johns - “A Day in the Life”
    6. Jason Castro - “Michelle”
    7. Carly Smithson - “Blackbird”
    8. Chikezie - “I’ve Just Seen a Face”
    9. Kristy Lee Cook - “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away”
    10. Ramiele Malubay - “I Should Have Known Better”
    11. Amanda Overmyer - “Back in the USSR”

My bottom three were Kristy, Ramiele and Amanda (all girls). I didn’t actually expect Ramiele to be in the bottom three. The Filipino vote is too strong for that at this stage in the contest. I don’t know if they are all tone deaf or what. Ramiele has been terrible for several weeks now but they just seem to desparately want one of their own to win. We fixed the Hawaii issue, so I wonder if there is a solution to this. It is clear that Ramiele won’t win and even if she did, she would not sell enough records to remained signed. I mean, Carly found herself in this week’s bottom three. While she wasn’t that great, there is no one that can convince me she deserved to be in the bottom three. I guess we have more proof that life is just not fair. So let’s get over it.

    Why Amanda Overmyer?

Amanda Overmyer gets eliminated from Season 7 of American Idol

I almost chose Amanda. Really, I did. But I thought that Amanda would have enough support from fans that might have liked her “sound” and from the Vote for the Worst campaign. This was the last week that I was going to let that campaign influence my decision. It looks like I went one week too long. Such is life. Amanda has been terrible for a few weeks now and didn’t seem to be able to carry a tune properly. She was incomprehensible during her songs. She had one “sound” that got old after her third performance. The Janis Joplin thing was cool at first because it seemed unique and different from the main stream. The problem with straying from the main stream is that you don’t sell records.Where is Taylor Hicks now? I believe I heard that he has already been dropped from his record label. Well, Amanda would have probably seen a similar fate anyway. She is much better served as a local playing small venues and bars. Put in some throw back Janis Joplin tracks and let her go to work. Of course, I would keep the nursing day job as well. Unfortunately, for Amanda, America just got weary of her act and horrible vocal skills. If you can call that skill.

America couldn’t even gravitate toward her beauty. She is definitely no Kady Malloy who may have been the hottest contestant ever on American Idol. Kady had the face, the body, and the personality. I just couldn’t get past the horrific hairdos that Amanda would showcase. Which is sad, really, because I thought she was hot when she wore the bandanna. Maybe it was because the hair was covered up. I don’t know. But she is a pretty girl and she rides a harley so she’s obviously not prissy or high maintenance. Anyway, Amanda is gone because she really couldn’t sing that great (at all) and we just couldn’t relate to her style (especially the ridiculous hair). Here is my tribute to Amanda and her hair color masterpiece.

Why not Carly Smithson or Kristy Lee Cook?

Kristy Lee CookKristy Lee Cook gave a much better performance this week compared to last week or pretty much any week prior. But in a manner similar to Kady’s, better didn’t necessarily equate to a good performance. Kristy seems awkward on the big stage. Nonetheless, there is some kind of magic touch she has because she’s been one of the final two contestants standing waiting to be eliminated for at least three weeks in a row now, if not more. She is definitely skating by and will need to give the performance of her life next week to avoid elimination. Then again, she’s still here, but only because America was finally tired of hearing Amanda perform.

Carly SmithsonThere was no way Carly was getting eliminated at this point. She has been great at times and good at others. She was boring and her choice of clothing was horrendous this week, but I was still shocked to hear she was in the bottom three. I immediately knew that she was Ramiele’s replacement. However, it did tell me that Carly’s days are numbered. It only makes sense that if she couldn’t make it before when she was signed by a record label on her own, then why would she be able to make it under a new one. Nonetheless, Carly has the vocal skills. What she lacks is good taste in body art and clothing style. I’m not sure that even in the year 2008 the general public is able to see past her innumerable tattoos. It’s like a new one pops up every week.

    The Remaining Finalists

    Top 12 Eliminated Contestants

The top 12 is where the real action starts because most of the non-contenders have been eliminated. There are still more contestants who have absolutely no chance to win that are still in, but their time will come shortly. Carly may be gone sooner that I expected and Ramiele has no business remaining in this competition. I’ve already stated that only four have a legitimate shot at this point, but I wouldn’t have an issue with adding another if things go perfectly Jason. He is a long shot but his smile is infectious and the ladies seem to love his shy goofiness. Otherwise, this season is up for grabs between the two Davids (Cook, Archuleta), Michael, and Brooke.

Hahaha the Amanda hair tribute is awesome! So accurate. The way she managed to get it so big in the back kind of blows my mind!

I’m not surprised she got voted off but I’m more surprised that Kristy is still in this thing. Luckily, I have Kristy, David and Amanda at the bottom of my american idol pool so I’m still good to go.

Very nice. Kristy is definitely skating on thin ice and will probably be eliminated next week.

Ramiele is easily the worst contestant remaining so we’ll see how that goes.

Heyyy! I’m Filipino. Who says we were all voting for Ramiele??! It may seem like it on the internet, but, eh? I haven’t voted for her since the first top 24 week. Glad that she made it and all but sry2say, she’s been ranging from bad to mediocre the past few weeks. In my family, if we were tone deaf it’d be for David Cook, because we just send votes up his way even when we miss the episode.

David Cook is solid and no longer needs this competition to succeed, so keep that up!

And I also didn’t intend to imply that every Filipino was voting for Ramiele, but you can’t deny she has a ton of Filipino support or she would have been in the bottom three in either of the last two weeks.

She has no chance of winning so ultimately it doesn’t matter when she gets voted off, because she will get voted off.

      Thanks for your thoughts!

David Cook? His last performance was kinda amateurish for me. He doesn’t compare to any of the past AI contestants like Daughtry or Bo Vice. Sorry, just my opinion, dude. I don’t see him really winning the AI competition or having a record deal in the future.

I think the other David will win this season.

Yeah, I agree that Archuletta will win barring a major surprise… and I agree that Cook is not as good as Daughtry… but he is easily the most talented contestant that actually fits into a genre… Brooke is interesting, and I just can’t seem to think of what kind of songs Archuletta might be singing on the radio..

But he will have a record deal waiting for him for whenever he leaves the competition. And don’t apologize, there’s nothing wrong with having a different opinion. I just call it like I see it through my eyes. Thanks for stopping by!!!

      Jeff,

I am going to flip-flop on what I said the last time. David Cook’s performance in last night’s show (3/25) was just amazing! I love it. If he continues like that, he’s going to win it.

As for Archuletta, his performance last night was very forgettable.

That’s quite alright. If you look back at my previous American Idol posts, you’ll see that I didn’t like David Cook very much either.

What can I say? He changed my mind too. I think he’s awesome now.
